What does a derivative actually mean?

It tells you how fast something is changing at a particular moment. On a graph, it’s the slope of the curve at that point.

Can you give me an everyday example?

Think of a car journey. Average speed describes the whole trip. A derivative is like reading the speedometer at one instant.

Quiz me on what I just learned.

A curve rises, reaches a smooth peak, then falls. What is its derivative exactly at the peak, and why?

Test what you understand.

Turn the concepts on your canvas into a quiz and see what has actually stuck.

Branch

Branch from any answer.

Start a new node from any reply. It keeps the path that led there, so you can explore without losing the thread.

Ask from selection
0:00 / 0:12

Choose the context. Ask what’s next.

Highlight the part that matters and ask about it. Canvas starts a new thread with exactly that context.

See the idea, not just the words.

Ask for a visual and Canvas draws a labelled diagram right next to the conversation it came from.

A feedforward neural network with three inputs, four hidden neurons and two outputs, with a callout of one neuron showing the weighted sum, bias and activation.
How does a neural network turn inputs into outputs?
VisualBiology
Chloroplast: sunlight and water enter the thylakoid, oxygen leaves, ATP and NADPH drive the Calvin cycle, which takes in carbon dioxide and releases glucose.
What happens inside a chloroplast?

Unit circle with angle theta, radius 1, and the right-triangle legs cos theta and sin theta.
Where do sine and cosine come from?
VisualPhysics
Cutaway of a liquid rocket engine: fuel and oxidizer flow through the injector into the combustion chamber, then through the throat and bell nozzle, producing upward thrust.
How does a liquid rocket engine make thrust?
